Looking at a MacBook?

I am looking at purchasing a MacBook Pro, and this will bey first laptop. My worry is, given how expensive Apple produce seem to be, and how quickly they become obsolete, it does not seem feasible to refresh my laptop every year. Also, should I go with a Mac, or will a Windows laptop be better for someone who relies on open-source software and the configurability that Windows allows?
