Why would a ceiling crackle or make a loud popping noise?

it has been happening for a long time in my home, but i cant understand why, does anyone else have this problem. the house is elevated on a foundation and it can get very cold in it at night. there is an attic but it is low and last year instalation was installed...but this is still going on.
